From Bestwood to Woodthorpe

Happy Ears is about 15 minutes from Bestwood Village by car, and closer still if you live on the Bestwood estate. The clinic is on a quiet residential road in Woodthorpe with free parking outside, so there is no hunting for a space.

Many people who book have already tried to sort the problem out themselves. That is understandable, but it often makes the blockage harder to shift, which is why this page covers what to avoid before you come.

Cotton buds and home ear gadgets

Not long ago Michele removed a plug of wax by irrigation for a patient from Arnold and found a small piece of plastic embedded in it. It had come from a DIY ear camera with a wax-removal attachment that had been used at home.

What tends to make it worse

Cotton buds push wax further into the ear canal, where it packs down and is harder to remove. They can also irritate the delicate skin inside the ear. Home cameras and scoops carry the same risk, because you cannot see how deep you are going.

What helps

Leave the inside of your ear alone and use olive oil spray twice a day for three to five days before your appointment. Softened wax comes away far more easily. How to prepare your ears

Michele does not recommend sodium bicarbonate drops.

If your hearing has dropped or your ear feels blocked, it is safer to have it looked at than to keep trying at home. Michele checks the ear first and only goes ahead when it is suitable.
