What kind of wax do you have?

Wax comes in different forms, and the type you have affects how it is removed. These are all from Michele's camera.

Camera view of an ear canal with softer, lighter wax along one side
Soft, fresh wax. Lighter in colour and usually comes away easily.
Camera view of new wax near the entrance of an ear canal
New build-up. Wax gathering near the entrance of the canal.
Camera view of an ear canal blocked by old, dark, compacted wax
Old, compacted wax. Darker and harder. This is the kind that needs a few days of olive oil first.

Why it matters

Soft wax often comes out quickly with microsuction or irrigation. Hard, compacted wax needs softening with olive oil spray for three to five days beforehand, otherwise it can be too stubborn to clear in one go.

Colour on its own is not usually a worry. Michele shows you what she sees and explains it. How to prepare your ears
