You only pay for what you need

Before she starts, Michele shows you inside your ears on a camera screen. You see the wax for yourself, and you only pay for the ears that need treatment.

Microsuction and irrigation

Not every clinic offers both. Michele uses whichever suits your wax, or both in the same appointment if that gets the best result, for the same price.

Who you will see

Michele owns and runs Happy Ears. She has more than 20 years of experience in the NHS and is a certified ear wax removal specialist, trained by Microsuction UK in microsuction, warm water irrigation and manual removal.

She looks in your ears before any treatment and checks that removal is safe. If she sees anything other than wax, such as an infection or a problem with the eardrum, she will not go ahead and will advise you to see your GP. More about Happy Ears

Before you book

Appointments are for people who know they have a wax build-up and are ready to have it removed. Please check each of these first:

  • You have been told you have wax, by a GP, a pharmacist or a previous check.
  • You have used olive oil spray twice a day for three to five days, and for at least two. How to prepare your ears
  • You are 18 or over.
  • You can come to the clinic in Woodthorpe. There are no home visits.

Why the preparation matters

Softened wax comes away more easily and more comfortably, and it usually comes out in one visit. Hard, dry wax often needs a second appointment.

If the wax cannot all be removed in one appointment and you prepared your ears beforehand, you get one return visit at no charge.

How the wax is removed

Microsuction

A fine, gentle suction tube lifts the wax out while Michele can see exactly what she is doing. It suits most wax that sits further down the canal. Ear microsuction

Warm water irrigation

A controlled flow of warm water loosens and flushes the wax out. It replaced old-style syringing and is still very effective for the right ears. Ear irrigation

Where wax sits near the entrance of the canal, it can often be lifted out with sterile instruments, which is the gentlest option when it is possible.

Private or NHS?

In Nottinghamshire, NHS ear wax removal is arranged through your GP. The local NHS board has said that referrals need a prior approval form and that there is a waiting list. Privately, you do not need a referral, and you can choose a time in the online diary that suits you.
