What ear wax is for

Inside an ear canal, filmed on Michele's camera.

Ear wax is not dirt. It is a natural substance the ear makes to protect and moisturise the canal and keep dust out. In most people it works its way out on its own, so healthy ears do not need cleaning inside.

It only becomes a problem when it builds up and blocks the canal. That tends to happen when it is pushed back in, by cotton buds, earbuds or hearing aids, or when the canal is narrow and the wax cannot escape.

When to book

Book when you have the signs of a blockage, such as muffled hearing or a full feeling in the ear. If your ears feel fine, leave them alone. Michele removes what is causing the problem, not the thin protective layer the ear needs.
